NIPSA has pledged its full support and solidarity to public sector workers across the Republic of Ireland who are taking strike action in pursuit of a fair pay settlement.
Workers represented by 19 unions including Fórsa, SIPTU and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Union have secured overwhelming mandates for industrial action following the failure to secure a meaningful public sector pay offer.
Industrial action is due to commence from 30 September, with a national strike planned for 14 October and further strike action proposed for 21 October if necessary.
NIPSA General Secretary Carmel Gates said:
"NIPSA welcomes the strong votes for strike action and stands shoulder to shoulder with public sector workers across the Republic of Ireland in their campaign for fair pay.
"The Republic of Ireland Government cannot plead poverty. The State is benefiting from strong tax revenues, budget surpluses and significant financial reserves. Public servants are entitled to their fair share of that success.
"When workers vote overwhelmingly for industrial action, Governments should take notice. Public servants have seen the cost-of-living rise while their pay has failed to keep pace.
"Shamefully, a government minister has criticised the action calling it ‘completely unwarranted’ but workers have every right to defend their living standards. They deserve a meaningful pay offer, they deserve respect, and they deserve better.
"NIPSA fully supports these workers and stands in solidarity with them in their efforts to secure the pay rise they have earned."
