Statement from NIPSA General Secretary, Carmel Gates:
The NICS did not consult with NIPSA in advance of the public announcement of a change to its approach to Pride events.
If we had been given the opportunity to engage in discussions on the issue, we would have urged them not to take this step.
Whatever their intentions, this decision can only be interpreted as a negative signal to all members of the LGBTQI+ community, their families and NICS staff.
We will be pressing the NICS to continue to honour its commitment to being a diverse and inclusive workplace.
NIPSA will take all necessary steps to support our LGBTQI+ community.
