National Work Life Week takes place from 5 – 9 October 2026 and is dedicated to getting employers and employees talking about wellbeing at work, work-life balance and flexible working.

Catherine Arkinson has put together some useful information and resources for branches and members to help promote a healthier work-life balance and support better working practices, on behalf of NIPSA Health and Safety.

What can NIPSA Branches do:
  • Review flexible working policies/procedures within your workplace to ensure they are not only fit for purpose but are being robustly applied.
  • Promote a Go Home on Time Ethos by encouraging members to finish work punctually.
  • Promote off-hours digital boundaries by championing the right for members to be able to ‘switch off’ outside of working hours
7 practical tips for NIPSA members to help build a healthy work-life balance:

1. Set Clear Boundaries

  • Define work hours and stop checking emails or messages after you log off.
  • Learn to say no to non-essential tasks that spill over into your personal time.

2. Take Regular Breaks

  • Step away from your desk or workspace several times a day.
  • Use short breaks to stretch, walk, or breathe fresh air to clear your mind.

3. Protect Your Lunch Time

  • Avoid working through lunch by closing your laptop or stepping away from your workstation.
  • Use this time to eat mindfully, socialise, or connect with nature.

4. Prioritise Tasks Wisely

  • Focus on high-priority goals and let go of perfectionism on minor tasks.
  • Separate work to-do lists from personal chores so you don't feel overwhelmed by everything at once.

5. Make Time for Hobbies and Rest

  • Schedule activities you enjoy—like reading, exercising, or seeing friends - just like you schedule work meetings.
  • View rest as productive, since downtime helps your brain recharge and perform better.

6. Disconnect Digitally

  • Turn off work notifications on your personal phone during evening and weekend hours.
  • Create a physical or mental buffer (like a fake commute or a short walk) to transition out of work mode.

7. Communicate Openly

  • Talk with your manager or team if your workload becomes too heavy or unmanageable.
  • Share ideas for flexible working or better workflows to support a healthier daily routine.
