To mark International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD), NIPSA Officials and members of our Health & Safety Committee attended a wreath‑laying ceremony on Monday 27 April at the Workers’ Memorial Commemorative Tree in the grounds of Parliament Buildings, Stormont Estate.
The wreath was laid by NIC ICTU Chairperson Jacquie White and the Minister for the Economy, Dr Caoimhe Archibald.
International Workers’ Memorial Day, held annually on 28 April, is a day of remembrance and reflection. It also reinforces the importance of health and safety at work, and the vital role trade unions play in protecting workers in every sector.
Every year in Northern Ireland, over 300 deaths are estimated to be work‑related, with thousands more workers suffering injury or ill‑health as a result of their jobs. These are not just figures, they represent lives lost, families affected, and workers harmed simply for doing their jobs.
Today is an opportunity to remember those we have lost and to renew our commitment to ensuring that no worker has to risk their health or life to earn a living.
Remember the dead. Fight for the living.
