NIPSA, representing over 1800 Police Staff, condemns the increasing levels of violence which its members are subjected to in their job roles.

Alan Law, Assistant Secretary, commenting on a recent case added:

“On the 10 March 2024, a Police Sergeant and Custody Detention Officer were viciously assaulted by a prisoner in the custody cells of their place of work. The impact of an assault leaves both physical and psychological injuries. It also took over one year for the matter to be dealt with by the Courts adding to the impact this has had on those involved.

It is abhorrent that any public servant should be subjected to violence in the workplace.

The alarm and distress which a workplace assault causes have a ripple effect both on the individual, their colleagues and family members. It is unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

Attacks on public sector works ultimately will have a negative effect on the quality of the service delivered as they will drive people away from this work.”
