Today marks the start of the new Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) cleaning contract, but for many workers, there's little to celebrate. With an estimated annual value of £10 million, the contract still threatens 1,535 cleaning hours per week, affecting over 150 sites across Northern Ireland.
NIPSA has consistently opposed these cuts, warning that replacing people with machines will undermine jobs and service quality. Despite concerns raised, Aramark's position remains unchanged.
In a positive development, Mount Charles has stepped forward, offering to help find alternative employment for those affected. NIPSA welcomes this move and encourages impacted workers to explore this opportunity.
Ryan Wilson, NIPSA Assistant Secretary, said:
"It may be April Fools' Day, but for these workers, there's nothing to laugh about. Their livelihoods are still at risk while public money is being spent on machines instead of jobs. We welcome Mount Charles offer of assistance for those affected and continue to urge full scrutiny of this contract and its impact on workers."
NIPSA remains committed to opposing these cuts and supporting affected staff.
