Couples and a Christian Minister to launch legal action against delays to extend full same-sex marriage to the region by January

The Love Equality Campaign has announced that legal action is to be taken against the UK Government for proposed delays in extending full equal marriage to Northern Ireland.

The Government has revealed that not all same-sex couples in Northern Ireland will have full access to marriage on 13 January – the date set in the landmark Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Act that passed into law on 21 October.

Under Government plans, same-sex couples in Northern Ireland will be able to apply for a civil marriage, but will not be able to convert an existing civil partnership to a marriage, nor will they be able to get married in a religious ceremony. That means that more than 1,200 couples in Northern Ireland who have civil partnerships will not be able to convert to married status in the New Year.

The Northern Ireland Office says it intends to run a public consultation on these issues next year.

A same-sex couple in a civil partnership, two Christian couples and a Christian Minister plan to launch a legal challenge against the UK Government’s failure to allow provisions for full equal marriage in Northern Ireland from next year. The case is backed by the Love Equality campaign for marriage equality, which secured the law change.

The Department of Finance has also confirmed that marriages conducted in other jurisdictions will not be recognised as marriages in Northern Ireland and will continue to be recognised as Civil Partnerships.

The Love Equality Campaign has launched a crowd funding appeal for the potential legal action against the Government. Click on the button below to donate.
