Given the decision by the NI Executive to close schools for a two-week period, including the
normal half-term holiday, a number of members have sought clarity from NIPSA as to what
their rights are in these circumstances which has been brought about by the Covid-19
pandemic.

NIPSA’s view is that if staff cannot work from home or make alternative childcare
arrangements they should apply for special paid leave to cover any Covid-19 school
closures that fall outside of the normal school holiday or school exceptional closure
arrangements.

Any parent in this situation should apply for special paid leave with immediate effect and
NIPSA will support you if you are unreasonably refused paid special leave.
