Given the decision by the NI Executive to close schools for a two-week period, including the normal half-term holiday, a number of members have sought clarity from NIPSA as to what their rights are in these circumstances which has been brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

NIPSA’s view is that if staff cannot work from home or make alternative childcare arrangements they should apply for special paid leave to cover any Covid-19 school closures that fall outside of the normal school holiday or school exceptional closure arrangements.

Any parent in this situation should apply for special paid leave with immediate effect and NIPSA will support you if you are unreasonably refused paid special leave.

In the first instance you should contact your branch secretary or representative for support or information. In the event that you cannot contact them you should visit the NIPSA website and details of phone numbers or email address of your Seconded Officer (by Department) is available.
