Further to my earlier post (April 10) regarding the postponement of NIPSA Conference I wish to advise that the General Council, at its meeting yesterday, took a number of decisions in relation to the 2020 NIPSA Conference. These decisions are set out below.
It was agreed the decision to postpone Conference was the right decision in light of the global pandemic. In considering how we deal with a number of issues it was agreed that, subject to the conditions being right, that we would seek to have a one-day Conference in September/October. While the detail has to be worked through regarding number of delegates etc and any public health advice at the time it is important that Branches are aware that this is now in the planning stage.
It was agreed the new General Council elected and announced on 18 February 2020 will take up office on 1 June 2020 in line with previous practice.
It was noted that election for Officers and various Committees normally take place at NIPSA Annual Delegate Conference. Given the Conference will not take place at the end of May, as it was scheduled to do so, the Council have decided to run the election via Branch Elections. This will mean that each Branch Secretary will receive ballot papers for the various elections set out below. Each branch will need to consider how best to engage with their members and seek a mandate, as per normal practice, on the candidate the branch wish to cast their vote. Details of this are being worked up and a further circular will issue later this week on the detail.
The Positions for Election Are as Follows:
NIPSA News Editorial Committee
Standing Orders Committee
I further wish to advise there are no elections due for the Equality and Global Solidarity Committees and those members nominated have been returned unopposed. Members will be communicated with separately in due course.
A further communication with more detail will be issued later this week.
