As members will be aware the decision to implement transitional protection for those in membership of public sector pension schemes at 1 April 2012 was found to be discriminatory on the basis of age following a case taken by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU). On 17 July 2020 Her Majesty’s Treasury (HMT) commenced a consultation on options to address the discrimination. This consultation does not apply to Northern Ireland. Pensions are a devolved matter in Northern Ireland and it is anticipated that a separate consultation will commence in Northern Ireland around mid-late August 2020. At that point in time a further information will be issued to members advising of the consultation and branches will be invited to submit comments on the consultation.
NIPSA plays a key role in the Central Consultation Working Group (CCWG) which was established a number of years ago and deals on a cross sector basis with all issues common across public sector pension schemes. This Group is made up of representatives of all trade unions with members in the public sector pension schemes and employer representatives.
Members in the NILGOS pension scheme will have a separate consultation as this is a funded scheme and is dealt with separately.
I hope this clarifies the position following a couple of queries from representatives.
