Advice on Safe Staffing
Members have reported to NIPSA that they are coming under severe pressure to carry out their job roles due to the chronic staffing shortages. In some cases we are aware that members are covering multiple jobs and feel vulnerable at work to the point that they are considering leaving the service. On that basis please see some advice below on how you should be carrying out your role:
- Only work your contracted hours;
- Don’t do unpaid work;
- Question what work you should stop doing if you are asked to cover vacant posts, sick leave or maternity leave.
- Take all your normal breaks.
If you have any issues you should raise these immediately through your line management, including completing a DATIX form, take a copy of that for yourself and your local trade union rep.
